Federica Pace, Director of Applied Sciences Europe, member of WISTA (ENG)

Hier vertellen vrouwen uit de maritieme sector hun verhaal. Met nu de beurt aan Federica Pace. Haar verhaal is in het Engels.

What do you do for work?

I am an environmental consultant specialised in assessing impacts of underwater sound on marine life. I have always been passionate about marine life, so I studied to become a marine biologist. During my education I discovered that learning acoustics would be the most useful tool to study marine life. I am passionate about protecting our seas and believe that making a true difference is by working together: support the industry in developing projects, in a way that is respectful to the environment. For this reason, I enjoy my job.

Does being a woman play a role in your work?

An important skill in my job is the ability to multitask. I believe that women are particularly good at that. It is also crucial to be able to understand client requests and adapt quickly to changing demands. In my job I often have to interface with male engineers and lead dedicated operations at sea, gaining quickly the trust of captain and crew. This requires a lot of self-confidence and humbleness. I find that as women we tend to doubt ourselves more and find it hard to be assertive compared to male colleagues.

What do you like most about your job?

Working on many different projects, interacting with people from different background and cultures. Above all I love that I can show how projects can be done while respecting marine life.

Being a woman with a lot of know how in the industry, which I am, can become almost a superpower in a male dominated industry.
