Delilah Warnaar, Marine Superintendent

On this website, women from the maritime sector share their stories. This is the story of Delilah Warnaar.

What kind of work do you do?

I work in the office at a shipping company, providing support to ships regarding safety, procedures, and onboard operations. I conduct internal ISM, ISPS, and MLC audits, and assist the crew when they have questions about the ISM, ISPS, or MLC, for example.

Does being a woman play a role in your work?

Yes, definitely! I come on board as a young woman to conduct audits. Sometimes the crew (all men) has doubts about my abilities because I’m a woman. In some cultures, it’s not normal for a woman to sail or to have sailed, so they often don’t really listen—or don’t want to listen—to what I have to say.

What do you like most about your job?

I love the diversity of my job and am happy to be working in the maritime sector. I especially enjoy chatting with the crew about their sea stories but also helping them whenever they need assistance with anything.

Sometimes the crew (all men) has doubts about my abilities because I’m a woman.
