Marije van Schaik, skipper inland shipping

On this website, women from the maritime sector share their stories. This is the story of Marije van Schaik.

What do you do for work?

I married a boy who was a skipper. Back then, if you married a skipper, you immediately became a skipper yourself. You ran the ship together and learned along the way. After my divorce, I missed sailing. I already had all the papers and decided to rent myself out as a reliever. I now work as a captain on various ships, when there is a shortage of personnel.

Does being a women play a role in your work?

Inland shipping is also a very beautiful profession for women. Indicate your boundaries well - but that applies to all professions, everywhere.

What do you like most about your job?

Being on the water is wonderful. The dynamics on board make it complete. At the beginning of the week, you never know where you'll end up. On board you are very dependent on each other, which creates a strong team spirit.
