Sanne Horlings, Crew Operator
On this website, women from the maritime sector share their stories. This is the story of Sanne Horlings.
What kind of work do you do?
I work in the crewing department at a shipping company in Groningen, where I make sure all crew members are assigned to the right ship. I also visit our ships regularly, fly to the Philippines, and keep an eye on everyone’s personal growth.
I chose this job after completing the Maritime Officer for All Ships program.
Does being a woman play a role in your work?
It doesn’t bother me; there are several women working in what is mostly a male-dominated industry. It’s best to just be yourself and not try to change too much for the outside world. Also, stand up for what you want and your ideas.
What do you like most about your job?
Visiting ships. Because I really enjoy keeping the lines of communication short between myself and the crew on board.
It’s best to just be yourself and not try to change too much for the outside world.
