Ynke Ooijkaas, maritime lawyer
On this website, women from the maritime sector share their stories. This is the story of Ynke Ooijkaas.
What do you do for work?
I always liked ships… Going to Hoek van Holland, looking at the ships, wondering where they came from and where they would be going. In law school I studied commercial and maritime law and became a maritime lawyer, specialised in inland shipping and the so called Bruine vloot (older ships). I advise my clients, on a multitude of subjects all regarding inland shipping, the crew, the owner, the incidents, the (cargo) disputes, criminal cases regarding shipping etc.
Does being a women play a role in your work?
The contact with people - they never cease to amaze me.
What do you like most about your job?
If people tell you, it is not possible, it is often that they don’t want to make it possible. If the good intentions are there, it will always work out (one way or another).
The contact with people - they never cease to amaze me.
